Neck Pain and
Arm Pain

Neck pain is the second most common cause of chronic pain and can lead to pain radiating down the arm. Neck pain can cause further symptoms including headaches, difficulty concentrating and completing everyday tasks like reaching and lifting.

What Causes Neck Pain?

The neck is a complex region connecting your head, neck, and shoulders.  An optimal posture is important for maintaining the optimal length and stability of the neck.  Many people carry stress in their shoulders and neck.

This can cause nerve irritation. When a nerve is irritated, the pain can travel down the neck and extend to your arm and hand.  Structures that can cause pain include joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, vertebrae, discs, and nerves. Pain limiting your ability can result in strains, sprains, and overuse injuries.

Conditions That Can Cause Pain

  • Whiplash
  • Sprains and strains
  • Herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Arthritis
  • Pinched nerve (cervical radiculopathy)
  • Narrowed spinal canal (stenosis)
